The University of Southern California, located in the Los Angeles area, is not immune to cold temperatures. Although it is not common to experience freezing rain, sleet and snow on campus, the following information is important to know.
What to Know
- Freeze WATCH- Below freezing temperatures are possible for a minimum of two hours.
- Freeze WARNING- Below freezing temperatures are expected for a minimum of two hours.
- Hard Freeze WATCH- Temperatures less than 27° F are possible for a minimum of two hours.
- Hard Freeze WARNING- Temperatures less than 27 ° F are expected for a minimum of two hours.
- Wind Chill Advisory- Very cold air and strong winds will combine to generate low wind chills, which could result in frost bite hypothermia if precautions are not taken.
What to Do
- In the event of Winter weather with temperatures below 32° F for several hours
- Protect People: Dress in warm layers. Try to stay dry and out of the wind. Also, remember to check on young children and the elderly who are most sensitive to the cold.
- Protect Pets: Bring outdoor pets indoors or provide them with warm shelter.
- Protect Pipes: Cover pipes and allow outdoor faucets to slowly drip to prevent freeing and breaking.
- Practice Fire Safety: Use safe heating sources indoors. Do not use fuel-burning devices such as grills. Also, make sure to use space heaters according to their instructions and be attentive to open flames.
