The USC campus is approximately 13.5 miles from the coast and although it is extremely rare for a hurricane to occur on the West Coast, the following information is important to know.
What to Know
- Hurricane WARNING– Hurricane conditions (sustained winds of 74 mph or greater) are expected. Issued 36 hours in advance of tropical storm-force winds give you time to complete preparations.
- Hurricane WATCH– Hurricane conditions (sustained winds of 74 mph or greater) are possible. Issued 48 hours before anticipated tropical storm-force winds.
- Tropical Storm WARNING– Tropical storm conditions (sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph) are expected within 36 hours.
- Tropical Storm WATCH- Tropical storm conditions (sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph) are expected within 48 hours.
- Extreme Wind WARNING- Extreme sustained winds of a major hurricane (115 mph or greater), usually associated with eyewall, are expected to begin within an hour.

- Have a plan-Personal Preparedness is key. As a member of USC, you are a critical component of the University’s emergency preparedness. Consider the specific needs in your household, including family members with special needs and pets. Communicate your plan with family and friends.
- Build a Kit– An essential part of your preparedness is having basic items you may need during an emergency. A kit includes a minimum of 3 days (72 hours) worth of essentials.
